What Are Sweat Control Prosthetic Textiles?
Sweating profusely is a problem for many amputees, but there are also many ways to control it. In addition to antiperspirants and deodorants, sweat control prosthetic textiles should be among the primary tools in your skin care toolbox. Sweat control textiles are layers of fabric that protect your skin against friction, wick away sweat, and create a cooling effect. Sheaths and prosthetic socks not only prevent discomfort caused by friction, they keep moisture from the skin, making it less likely you'll be battling a skin disorder later.
Prosthetic socks are worn directly against your limb to provide a degree of padding, insulate against cold, and cool you off when it's hot by wicking perspiration away from the skin. For sweat control, a prosthetic sock mimics the body's natural cooling process -- sweat evaporates to cool you off -- inside the enclosed socket environment, so your skin stays drier and you stay more comfortable while wearing your prosthesis.
A nylon sheath, a type of sock worn directly against the skin, works a little differently. Nylon sheaths are a barrier to both friction and to moisture between the skin, the sock, and the prosthesis. When worn beneath a liner, nylon sheaths do the same work that prosthetic socks do: they wick moisture away from the skin in order to cool you off.
Sweat control prosthetic textiles can make a big difference in your skin's health and your daily comfort if worn correctly and changed often.
