Man With Below-Knee Limb Loss Sets World Record for Heaviest Vehicle Pulled

    Reading Time: 2 minutes

A man from Clones, County Monaghan, Ireland, claimed the Guinness World Record for the Heaviest Vehicle Pulled (LA2) in Dublin on May 18, 2024. But Shane McLaughlin isn’t just any man who spent hours training; he achieved this feat despite not having his left leg below the knee and wearing a spring-loaded prosthetic leg.

Man with below-knee limb loss sets Guinness World Record for heaviest vehicle pulled.

McLaughlin tugged an 18,000kg truck forward using only special belts attached to his shoulders and waist.

After accomplishing this incredible feat, McLaughlin turns his focus on breaking his own record. To achieve that goal, he continues to train, part of which is accepting invitations to events all over Ireland and the UK. McLaughlin’s attendance at these events helps raise funds for various charities.

In addition to supporting fundraisers across the country, he also aims to raise awareness about the capabilities of amputees like himself to achieve remarkable athletic accomplishments despite limb loss.

Before setting the world record, McLaughlin had retired after competing in the Paralympics for shot-put for six years. Only recently did he decide to come out of retirement and begin training for these challenges.

The idea came from watching others do similar challenges on TV. In an interview with The Anglo-Celt, McLaughlin shared that he began by pulling one truck for fun. That one truck led to three and then ten trucks.

In August, McLaughlin traveled to Donington Park Circuit in Derby, England, to compete against other strong men pulling trucks. He became the first person living with limb loss to face the usual able-bodied competitors.

As McLoughlin continues to pursue even greater challenges, his journey is a powerful reminder that anyone can achieve remarkable feats with passion and resilience, regardless of physical limitations.
