Double Amputee Honored With Amelia Earhart Award

Posted by Bryan Potok on

Mandy Horvath, a 29-year-old double amputee, recently received the 2022 Amelia Earhart Pioneering Achievement Award for her triumph over adversity. The Missouri native has reached some of the highest points on Earth, such as Africa’s Mt. Kilimanjaro, without legs.

Double amputee Mandy Horvath receives Amelia Earhart Award.

The Atchison Amelia Earhart Foundation chose Horvath for this year’s award as they believe she’s a genuine and inspirational mentor for younger girls.

In an interview with Fox 4, Horvath said that she and Earhart would have gotten along well. Earhart was born in Atchison in 1897 and was the first woman to fly a plane solo across the Atlantic Ocean.

Horvath lost both her legs in a horrible train accident. Despite what happened to her, Horvath proves that if you have a determined spirit, the sky’s the limit on what can be accomplished.

Horvath is the first bilateral amputee to static skydive and the first woman to climb Chicago’s Manitou Incline. Furthermore, she has conquered Pikes Peak in Colorado twice. In 2021, Horvath counted Mt. Kilimanjaro and Cerro Tusa, the world’s tallest natural pyramid, on that list.

According to Karen Seaberg, president and founder of the Atchison Amelia Earhart Foundation, Horvath asked why the foundation chose her. Seaberg told Horvath that she deserved the award for rising above horrible circumstances, which is the whole point of the award.

In her time, Earhart shattered several glass ceilings for women with her plane. Horvath says she plans to continue that legacy in her adventures.

Horvath also received $10,000 to donate to her charity of choice.
