This Flexible Prosthetic Foot Mimics Human Movement

    Existing lower limb prostheses commonly have flat feet. Although this design ensures stability, it cannot adapt to terrain contour and slope changes. Researchers from the Italian Institute of Technology (IIT) recently introduced the SoftFoot Pro, which is not only flexible but also motor-free and apt for all-weather use. This new design could be a game-changer for many people with lower limb loss.

     The SoftFoot Pro is inspired by the human foot, offering stability and flexibility in everyday movement.

    The SoftFoot Pro is inspired by the human foot. It emulates the human foot’s shape and its anatomical structures. Because of this design, the new prosthetic foot can deform and adapt to various terrains, slippery or rough, and provide improved stability and a more natural walking experience.

    The SoftFoot Pro features a movable arch made of aluminum alloy or titanium for maximum strength. This arch is connected to five high-strength plastic chains, mimicking the human foot’s plantar fascia, helping to spread pressure evenly on the ground. These chains are connected with an ultra-durable cable that measures 210 mm from toe to heel.

    In a press release, the researchers highlighted that the design of the arch system and elastic chains imitates the structure of the human foot, specifically the phalanges, tarsus, and metatarsus.

    SoftFoot Pro is designed to mimic the natural positions of the human feet, providing flexibility for everyday activities like picking something up from the ground or bending down to tie a shoe. It also enhances the walking experience on stairs.

    Despite weighing only around 450 g, it can support users up to 100 kg. Additionally, its waterproof and adaptable nature allows users to navigate various terrains without requiring a prosthetic switch to accommodate different activities.

    The latest prototype was shown to the public for the first time during the 2024 G7 Health Track’s Technical Event in Genoa. The event focused on life-long prevention for healthy and active aging. Previously, it was presented to the scientific community in Japan at the 2024 IEEE International Conference on Robotics and Automation.

    SoftFoot Pro's innovative design is internationally patent-protected. Two patents have been secured, and a third is under review by the European Patent Office. Individuals with lower limb loss have also tested it.
