Some SoCal Beaches Take Steps to Accommodate Individuals with Disabilities
Reading Time: 2 minutes
A trip to the beach is a great idea not only for the summer. Southern California’s rolling tides, salty breeze, and golden sunsets can be enjoyed any season, and simply staring into the horizon can offer great mental health benefits. Although enjoying the beach can be difficult for those with prosthetic legs or who use wheelchairs, the good news is that Southern California’s beaches are becoming more accessible.
Many beaches now offer access mats or “mobi mats” that make it easier to traverse the sandy terrain while wearing prosthetic legs. Additionally, beach wheelchairs with large, wide wheels are increasingly available, providing a smooth ride across the sand and making beach outings not only possible but also enjoyable for everyone. Recently, the Lions Club in Seal Beach donated a new beach wheelchair, enhancing accessibility for individuals with mobility impairments.
In an interview with ABC News, Jake Miller, a specialist ocean lifeguard with the LA County Fire Department, emphasized the convenience of beach wheelchairs. He pointed out that these chairs can be navigated by just one person, unlike traditional wheelchairs that require multiple individuals for assistance.
Furthermore, beach wheelchairs are designed to provide access to the water line, offering an inclusive beach experience.
If you’re looking to enjoy Southern California’s beaches, it’s worth noting that select beaches offer beach wheelchairs and access mats or mobi mats. Beach wheelchairs may need to be reserved in advance, but some beaches provide these on a first-come, first-served basis. To ensure availability, it’s best to inquire before going.
