Watch: A Filmmaker Unveils the Art and Beauty Behind Prosthesis Creation
Reading Time: 1 minute
The process of creating a prosthetic leg can be a beautiful artistic journey. In her short documentary “Fitting,” Scottish filmmaker Caitlin McMullan beautifully captures this idea.
Rather than presenting the creation process as a purely mechanical endeavor, McMullan highlights the special bond between herself and her prosthetist, Alison Morton. The film documents their collaboration as they go through essential steps like measuring, molding, fitting, and feeling the prosthetic limb. Through this personal exploration, McMullan offers an intimate glimpse into the remarkable craftsmanship that goes into each prosthetic leg, which blends scientific precision with a delicate touch.
Additionally, prosthetic users will be interested in McMullan’s conversations with Morton and how these conversations reveal the different perspectives each has on the process of creating and the final product.
“Fitting” premiered at the Edinburgh International Film Festival 2023 and has since been shown at numerous film festivals, including the Scottish Mental Health Arts Festival 2023, ReFrame Film Festival 2024, and Braziers Film Festival 2024, among others.
