41-Year-Old Mom Walks for the First Time After Losing All Four Limbs to Sepsis

    Reading Time: 2 minutes

Lucinda Mullins from Kentucky lost her arms and legs due to a rare sepsis infection after a routine surgery to remove kidney stones just before Christmas last year. In a remarkable display of resilience, she took her first steps using her new prosthetic legs in June of this year.

Lucinda Mullins, a quadruple amputee, walks on her prosthetic legs for the first time.

Mullins, 41, posted a video of herself walking out of a room at Cardinal Hill Rehabilitation Hospital in Lexington. In the clip, she is seen wearing a pair of vibrant pink prosthetic legs. As the door to the hospital room opens, Mullins smiles and takes a few small steps while using a walker for support. The video recreates a scene from the movie The Princess Diaries, where Mia Thermopolis, played by Anne Hathaway, undergoes a princess makeover.

Around the same time, Mullins also received robotic arms that can be controlled by moving her shoulders.

In an interview with WKYT, Mullins shared that while she has had difficult days where she wants “to sleep or cry or feel sorry” for herself, she’s had more good days. The latter consists of celebrating small victories, like holding the TV remote and changing the channel.

Walking and using her prosthetic arms mark a significant milestone for the mother of two, who spent last Christmas sedated in the hospital. Mullins, who is also a nurse, was in critical condition after her kidney stone became infected and she developed sepsis. She had to come to terms with the fact that she would survive at the cost of all four of her limbs.

However, in an interview with WKYT, she shared that she’s not angry over what happened to her and has not questioned it. She believes that God chose her for a reason. “These are the cards I’ve been dealt, and these are the hands I’m going to play,” she said.

Mullins shares reports of her progress to TikTok and Facebook, celebrating milestones like learning to walk and eat once again.
