Step 1: Measure Circumferences

Measure the circumference along three areas of your limb. First begin measuring the circumference 6 inches (15cm) above the middle of your knee cap. Second measure the circumference around your knee cap. And last, measure the circumference 2 inches (5cm) up from the bottom of your limb.

Step 2: Length

Length is a matter of preference. However, a good rule is to select a length that is 2-3 inches past your knee cap.

Step 3: Find your size

Take all of your circumference and length measurements and use the chart below to determine your size. If you're in-between sizes, we suggest remeasuring again to be on safe side.

TOP (in) MID-KNEE CAP (in) BOTTOM (in)
Size 1 16 1/4 12 1/4 11 1/2
Size 2 17 1/4 13 1/2 12 1/2
Size 3 18 1/2 14 1/2 13 3/4
Size 4 19 3/4 15 3/4 15
Size 5 20 3/4 17 16 1/4
Size 6 22 18 17 1/4
LENGTH (in)
Short 12
Medium 15

When taking body measurements, you need to use the correct type of tape measure. You will want to use a soft cloth or flexible plastic  tape measure, similar to what a seamstress uses. Do not use a metal measuring tape, used in construction (your measurements will be inaccurate).  Pay special attention not to pull your measuring tape too tight.  Doing so will produce a measurement that is too small.

The most difficult measurement is the bottom measurement.  Too often, people measure too high along the bottom of their limbs producing a larger "Bottom" measurement.  Ideally, measure 2 inches up from the bottom of your limb and use a pen to mark this level on your limb. Once you know exactly where to measure, use a tape measure to carefully measure your bottom circumference.

Knit-Rite 4-Way Stretch BK Shrinker Description

The Knit-Rite 4-Way Stretch BK Shrinker is a thoughtfully engineered shrinker for below knee amputees. The 4-Way BK Shrinker features stretchy polyester/Lycra core-spun yarns providing multidirectional stretch for a shrinker that creates less discomfort when applying. The 4-Way multidirectional stretch also prevents that pocket of extra material from forming along the bottom of your limb. Silicone beads along the top of the shrinker will prevent it from rolling down in the middle of the night. Knit-Rite has been manufacturing prosthetic textiles since the 1920s and they know how to engineer a quality shrinker.

Benefits

This Knit-Rite BK shrinker may be the finest prosthetic shrinker you'll ever wear. Its multidirectional stretch allows it to mold itself to your limb and avoid that typical extra pocket of material along the end of your residual limb. The 4-Way Shrinker's ability to stretch, creates a more tolerable donning process for new and sensitive residual limbs. Most BK shrinkers are knitted with a seam that leaves the potential for skin irritation. The Knit-Rite 4 Way shrinker has a seam that is flat and blends into the rest of the shrinker.

Suggested Use

Prosthetic shrinkers play an integral part of your rehabilitation, as well as your long term care. A properly fitting shrinker can assist in phantom limb pain management and help maintain a specific limb size. As a new amputee, a Knit-Rite shrinker can assist with limb maturation, preparing you for your first prosthetic fitting. As an experienced prosthetic user, a BK shrinker worn nightly can ensure you are the right size the next morning to properly apply your prosthetic leg.

How-to Apply

It is highly recommended that you consult with your prosthetic professional for proper guidelines on the application of this Knit-Rite BK shrinker and report any changes in the fit or the condition of your limb. Changes in your limb may occur over time and it may be necessary to take new measurements for a new Knit-Rite 4 Way shrinker. Do not wear the shrinker while your prosthesis is in use.
