4 Holy-Grail Prosthetic Skincare Products You Need

Posted by Bryan Potok, CPO on

While trying out new skincare products can be fun, more often than not, sticking with what has worked best for you (and for many others) is best for your overall well-being and your bank account. This is especially true when it comes to prosthetic skincare. The four holy grail prosthetic skincare products you should add to your regimen.

We wanted to find out which prosthetic skincare products many of you couldn’t do without. So, we combed through the customer feedback we’ve gathered throughout the years, and we came up with four products that have achieved holy grail status.

1. Prosthetic Salve

Prosthetic users have more than their fair share of skin issues, from dry, cracked skin to friction-related blisters. A typical moisturizer is too lightweight to soothe or treat these prosthetic-related issues. Situations like these call for the targeted relief only a prosthetic salve can offer.

One of the most purchased products on Amputee Store is the Amputee Essentials Resilience Prosthetic Salve, which offers on-the-spot and targeted relief for skin grafts, compromised skin, high-friction areas, and boney prominences. Basically, anywhere skin is at risk inside your prosthetic socket. This prosthetic salve can also prevent skin cell damage caused by excessive prosthetic socket friction or rubbing.

2. Prosthetic Moisturizer

Everyone, regardless of skin type, is encouraged to wear a moisturizer daily. It protects the skin from environmental stressors, and the additional moisture allows the skin to repair itself fast. A good prosthetic moisturizer does the same and more for the skin around the residual limb.

A popular choice is the Amputee Essentials Resilience Ultra-Rich Moisturizer, a non-greasy moisturizer formulated to provide immediate relief for dry, uncomfortable skin. It doesn’t contain parabens or synthetic fragrances, making it safe and gentle for all skin types, including sensitive skin. This moisturizer is also safe for prosthetic sleeves and liners.

3. Chafe Barrier Cream

Although chafing is a regular occurrence for many prosthetic users, the good news is most types of chafing can be managed with a good chafing product. This is where a Chafe Barrier Cream, or anti-chafing cream, comes in.

A chafe barrier cream is designed to ease dry or damaged skin caused by constant friction. Its main ingredient is dimethicone, a non-toxic silicone, which provides a smooth application and creates a protective barrier that leaves skin hydrated longer.

The Amputee Essentials Resilience Chafe Barrier Cream is an instant favorite. This non-greasy cream provides a lubricant barrier that blocks friction. It doesn’t contain parabens or synthetic fragrances, making it suitable for all skin types, including sensitive skin.

One of the cream’s main ingredients is shea butter, which is known to effectively nourish and moisturize the skin while aiding its natural collagen production. It also contains oleic, stearic, palmitic, and linoleic acids, all of which protect and nourish your skin to prevent it from drying.

4. Prosthetic Antiperspirant

Nearly all prosthetic users suffer from excessive sweating. It can be uncomfortable, especially when you’re sweating buckets inside your prosthesis. If you have prosthetic hyperhidrosis, it’s best to include a strong prosthetic antiperspirant in your skincare regimen.

Many users turn to a bottle of Alps Prosthetic Antiperspirant Spray. It contains twice the aluminum chlorohydrate found in typical consumer brands, which means this product is twice as effective in preventing excessive sweat. It also indirectly prevents body odor, sweat rashes, and chafing.

Each of these four products has outstanding qualities that merit their holy grail status. We think they deserve a permanent spot on your bathroom shelf or amputee survival kit.

Which of these products is your favorite, and why? Do you have any other prosthetic skincare favorites? Please share your thoughts in the comments section below.
